RESOURCES

Making a safe space is crucial to LGBTQ+ youth. If you can make your classroom, sports team, community, or afterschool group accepting and understanding, LGBTQ+ youth can feel safe to express themselves. To make a safe space, you should understand terms and identities pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community, invite all participants to share their pronouns if comfortable as part of getting-to-know-you activities, refer to all participants by their correct pronouns, and try to have access to all-gender restrooms. There are many ways you can take steps towards creating a safer space for LGBTQ+ youth, as discussed in our research and our panelist workshop.

Our Research As A Resource

This semester, we conducted a survey of youth in our community and asked what “safety” meant to them, where they experienced it, and how they thought people could do better when it comes to creating safe spaces. You can see the results on these slides, which include quotes from LGBTQ+, questioning, and ally youth, and the data from their responses about what it means to feel safe.

We compiled our data through Google form with over 70 participants ranging from sixth grade all the way to adult allys.

If you’d like to see us break down the data and answer questions, along with quotes from our survey respondents about their own personal experiences, you can watch our live video presentation here.
